Understanding the European Standard Charging Cable Designation

Date:2024/3/18 6:28:02

Electric vehicle charging equipment needs to have industry standards for its safety and reliability to do constraints and guarantees, for the important carrier of electric energy transmission, charging cable needs to comply with regional standards, in order to be conducive to the construction of charging facilities. The following is an introduction to the interpretation of the code of the European standard.

Rated voltage level U0/U: U0 is the voltage rms value between the conductor with insulation and the shield and dielectric. u is the voltage rms value between any two phases of a multi-core cable or of a single-core cable.

CE: European Union safety mark of conformity.
Type 121: Sheath material is EVM-1, suitable for charging mode 1 of IEC 61851-1 (rated voltage 300/500V). Specification range: 3x1.5mm²~3x2.5mm².
Type 122: Sheath material EVM-2 for charging mode 1 of IEC 61851-1 (rated voltage 300/500V). Specification range: 3x1.5mm²~3x2.5mm²
Type 123: Sheath material EVM-1, suitable for charging mode 1, 2 and 3 of IEC 61851-1 (rated voltage up to 450V/750V). Specification range: 3x1.5mm²~3x35mm², 4x2.5mm²~4x35mm², 5x2.5mm²~5x35mm².
Type 126: DC charging cable with rated voltage 0.6/1KV AC or 1.5KV DC, sheathed in EVM-1, suitable for charging mode 4 of IEC 61851- 1. Range of sizes: 2x4mm²~2x150mm² + earth wire 4mm²~95mm².

EVI-1 and EVI-2: EVI is the name given to halogen-free insulating compounds in the IEC62893 and EN50620 standards. Only EVI-2 can be used to insulate power lines, while EVI-1 and EVI-2 can be used to insulate control/signal lines. The performance requirements of EVI-1 and EVI-2 are different, for example, the standard requirements are: tensile strength of EVI-1 ≥15N/mm², elongation at break ≥300%, while the tensile strength of EVI-2 is ≥8.0N/mm², and the elongation at break ≥200%. The key difference is that EVI-1 has a requirement for high temperature pressure testing and EVI-2 has a requirement for thermal extension testing. So EVI-1 needs to be a thermoplastic material (TPE) and EVI-2 needs to be a halogen-free cross-linked material (XLPO).

EVM-1 and EVM-2: EVM is the name of halogen-free sheathing compounds for cables in IEC62893 and EN50620 standards.EVM-1 is applied to Z5 of EN50620 and 121 and 123 and 126 of IEC62893, and EVM-2 is applied to Z6 of EN50620 and 122 of IEC62893.The performance requirements of EVM-1 and EVM-2 are different. EVM-2 performance requirements are different, for example, the standard requirements: EVM-1 tensile strength ≥ 20N/mm ², elongation at break ≥ 300%, tear resistance ≥ 40N/mm ²; while EVM-2 tensile strength ≥ 10N/mm ², elongation at break ≥ 150%, tear resistance ≥ 10N/mm ², the aging temperature of the mechanical properties test after aging is different, the most important differences between The key difference is that EVM-1 has the requirement of thermal shock and high temperature pressure test, and EVM-2 has the requirement of thermal extension test. So EVM-1 needs to be a thermoplastic material (TPU) and EVM-2 needs to be a halogen-free cross-linked material.
